details are emerging about the deadly rampage in connecticut that left 28 people dead, including good evening. chilling new details are emerging about the deadly rampage in connecticut that left 28 people dead. sources say the shooter adam lanza shot his mother four times in the head apparently as she lay sleeping. computers in the home were found smashed. he then drove to the school and forced his way in by shooting out a window. as police closed p in, lanza shot himself. president obama spoke at a memorial. he arrived an hour before meeting private well family members of those killed in the mass ser. then he spoke in the memorial service. >> can we say that we're truly doing enough to give all the

children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness? and with purpose? i've been reflecting on this the last few days. if we're honest with ourselves, the answer is no. we're not doing enough. and we will have to change. >> and we'll have more on that memorial shortly with the mass shooting still fresh on many people's minds many politicians are drawing attention to stricter gun control laws. >> reporter: it happens after every u.s. mass firearms tragedy. the demand for greater controls on gun. the debate gets more and more heated, only to ultimately cool down. will it be differently this time? some say yes. in a nation with an estimated 12,000 firearm related

homicides each year the massacre in connecticut has touched a national nerve. it's being called a tipping point. >> i think we could be at a tipping point for two reasons. a tipping point where we might actually get something done. >> reporter: one reason is the brutality of murdering 20 children. another is the near regularity of shooting sprees. >> the public will not accept, the public will not accept as a new normal one of these incidents every month, these mass shootings. >> reporter: the newtown killings have prompted senator dianne feinstein to introduce an updated version of her assault weapons ban. >> it will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively, but perspectively, and it will ban the same for big clips, drugs, or strips of more than 10 bullets. >> reporter: but the control advocates know they face a formidable foe in those who

spoke to parishioners. >> the important thing is not to lose hope. >> reporter: people with heavy hearts came to st. mary's cathedral today for comfort and community. >> my heart is still in sorrow and i'm here to give thanks for my family and having my children and being blessed. >> reporter: the church put up a memorial to the people that dad in connecticut with white ribbons and a prayer for their soul. >> our hearts are all just torn by this. >> how can anybody really hurt kids? >> the church has a book where you can write and register your prayers. there are a lot of words here about sorrow and comfort and love. >> reporter: sergio vasquez leads a confirmation program. he brought medals bless aid by the archbishop for each of his students, a symbol asking for higher power and protection. >> i think god is in those that gather and those that support each other so i'm here to offer a little bit of that to my kids. >> reporter: they've had a lot of questions.

>> i couldn't wrap my mind around who would kill all those innocent children. >> reporter: while there are no easy answers, vasquez says the conversation is what's important. >> allowing them to express their confusion and their anger and their hurt. >> reporter: the same emotions that can cause many faithful to question their god. >> our faith is shaken occasionally, but that's why it's so important to have a strong faith and to remain consist out in in our faith in good times so that when difficult times such as these come about, we can fall back and rely on that faith. >> reporter: in san francisco, cbs 5. let's now go live to new town, connecticut where at the present time just finished addressing the memorial service. cbs has more on his comments. >> reporter: anne, good evening. i'm standing here the high school where president obama spoke at a vigil just a little while ago, telling mourners they are not alone in their grief and saying these

tragedies must stop. hundreds of mourners gave first respond ears standing ovation. president obama is there to help this community deal with the tragedy. >> here in newtown, i come to offer the love and prayers of the nation. i am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow. >> reporter: this tight-knit community came together to remember the 20 first graders and six adults gunned down at sandy hook elementary school on friday. >> we ask god to grant those lost a special place in paradise, and we ask their families to be granted the strength to endure the unendurable. >> reporter: as people here in newtown gravy, investigators say they have the best of the best working to gather evidence so they can determine a motive for friday's shooting. >> we have to have the whole picture before we can say hopefully how and c this occurred. that's not going to come very

quickly. >> reporter: police say the gunman, adam lanza, shot his mother in the head as she laid in bed, then drove to the school. investigators say the 20-year- old had hundreds of unused bullets on him and used a high- powered rifle to it shoot all the victims in one hallway and two classrooms. >> to pick on six and seven- year-olds is just -- it's beyond horrific. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news the massacre may have gone on longer but lanza shot himself in the head when he heard police coming. for the families of the victims, one of the hardest parts is yet to come. funeral services begin this weekend. >> the president said he was offering the love of the nation to those grieving. but he also said there has to be change to prevent these tragedies. so how are people reacting to the memorial service? >> reporter: we spoke to some of the people that were in the vigil. they said that they felt very encouraged. they kept saying that we need to come together as a

the suspect had a weapon. the building was he vac wairktsd and surrounding streets were closed as police tried to talk to the. eventually the suspect surrendered to police. he was detained on suspicion of domestic vile lengths. police say they have arrested three people in connection with a murder of two teenage girls in east oak land. the two adults and a juvenile are in custody, though they have not been formally charged. police say one of them has made admissions connecting the trio to the murder. 16-year-old bobby and 15-year- old raquel of san leandro were shot and killed on november 25th. berkeley might join alameda county in an effort to become a no-drone zone. this would prevent law enforcement from using the

unmanned planes. some complain the drones are an invasion of privacy. the committee is expected to hold a public hearing next month to discuss buying a surveillance drone with adds 31,000 grant. our next round of rain is making its way into the bay. that means a winter storm warning is in effect for the sierra. snow level down to around 3,000 feet in effect through monday night. could see one to two feet above 5,000 feet, and some windy, gusty conditions overnight. what this means for the weather here in the bay area coming up after the break. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

julie is in forecasting rain. guess what, it is going to get colder. >> it feels like december. >> it does. >> i was in san jose this weekend. it's so much colder south bay than it is by the bay. it has been chilly. this is just the beginning. temperatures will continue to cool. in fact, get down right cold. here's a look at hi-def doppler. we're watching just the beginning of our next round of rain showers moving into the north bay. they will increase overnight tonight and make their way south just in time for the morning com 3450u6789 we're not talk a real significant amount of rain, but enough to make for a messy commute. slick roadways tomorrow morning. here's a look at satellite. the leading edge of the cold front this is about to change everything and really drop temperatures for us over the coming days. in fact, notice just how low our jet stream dips. as does it, we are ushering in cold, arctic air, and that is

going to take over midweek and really drop those temperatures. snow level down to around 2,000 feet by tuesday. and frost likely because we're not going to have a whole lot of moisture left by tuesday, so instead of snow, most of us will be dealing with frost tuesday and wednesday morning. keep that in mind if you have any outdoor plants or pets. cold by midweek before. we get to there we have to deal with. this that is rain. our next round moving in for the north bay with the scattered clouds making its way to the north bay overnight, spreading south through the bay area for the morning commute. we could see some lingering showers for the monday afternoon hours, but for the most part, most of our moisture will diminish, then just scattered showers through tuesday. here's a look at temperatures tomorrow, similar to today. mid to upper 50s for the warmest locations. maybe a couple near 60, spots like san jose. but we will see temperatures drop as we continue through the work week. take a look at tuesday.

two straight weeks. 49ers play tonight. currently san francisco sledding by one game over seattle. if the 49ers win tonight the lead will go back to game and a half. but if the 49ers lose the lead is just a half game, and next week they travel to seattle. falcons playing host to the giants. late first quarter, 7-0, matt ryan, tony gonzales, 14-0. third quarter, ryan up top to julio jones for a 40-yard score. screen, with two touchdowns. the falcons blanked the giants. that is the worst shutout loss for a defending super bowl champion. new york is now tied with the nfc east. dallas hosting pittsburgh. fourth quarter, pittsburgh leading 24-17 but demarco murray to tie the game at 24. and it went to everytime. clamp bailey to win it. it's chip shot, and it's good. cowboys win 27-24 in overtime.
